Cardinals Fall 4-0 to Notre Dame
March 10, 2019 | Men's Tennis
Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and Fabien Salle won 6-3 at No. 1 doubles.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's tennis team fell 4-0 to Notre Dame on Sunday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. With the loss, the Cardinals drop to 11-5 overall and 1-2 in ACC play.
"Being at home in front of a great crowd, I felt like we should have started off winning that doubles point," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "We should have gotten that one, and then there were three or four close matches right there at the end that we hopefully could have gotten. That was the game plan, and when it didn't start off right, it didn't finish right."
The Cardinals gained the initial advantage in doubles as Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and Fabien Salle topped William Howells and Axel Nefve 6-3 at No. 1. However, Notre Dame won the final two doubles courts to take the 1-0 lead as Guillermo Cabrera and Tristan McCormick defeated George Hedley and Brandon Lancaster 6-4 at No. 2 and Grayson Broadus and Matt Gamble won 7-6 (7-4) over Alex Wesbrooks and Sergio Hernandez at the three-spot.
Notre Dame extended its lead to 2-0 with Howells' 6-1, 6-1 victory over David Mizrahi at No. 5. Just minutes later, Notre Dame's No. 13 Nefve triumphed over Morin-Kougoucheff 6-1, 6-1 on court one to add to their lead.
The final four singles courts came down to the wire, but Notre Dame's Grayson Broadus was able to clinch the 4-0 win for the Irish with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Alex Wesbrooks at No. 6.
In other singles action, Lancaster fell 7-6 (7-4) in the first set, but was winning 5-2 in the second over McCormick at No. 2. At the three-spot, Hernandez fell 6-3 in the first, but rallied for a 6-1 victory in the second set and was ahead 2-1 in the third when the match was decided.
Salle downed Cabrera 6-3 in his first set, but lost 6-3 in the second and was down 2-1 in the midst of the third.
Up next, Louisville will play Wright State in the second match of today's doubleheader at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. Match time is slated for 6:30 p.m.
