Cardinals Rally Past Clemson 4-3
February 24, 2019 | Women's Tennis
Nikolina Jovic defeated No. 82 Fernanda Navarro to clinch the match for Louisville.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Nikolina Jovic defeated No. 82 Fernanda Navarro to lift the University of Louisville women's tennis team to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Clemson on Sunday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. With the victory, the Cardinals improve to 10-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
Despite dropping the doubles point and each of the first six singles sets, the Cardinals rallied to force a third set in five singles matches and won nine of the final 11 sets to secure the victory.
"That was the definition of a roller coaster. I don't know what the problem was, but we came out so flat. We were in a daze and got ourselves in holes," said UofL head coach Mark Beckham. "I feel like we should have won the doubles point and didn't, so that was a point given away. Then we were trying to fight to dig out of a hole against a very good team, tough to do. I feel like there was another singles match that we should have been more competitive in and we lost it pretty quick and the hole was getting bigger and bigger."
"As soon as we got the first point, the switch flipped. From there, the energy got better and we were able to fight from behind a wall and figure out a way to get the match. I'm really happy with the win obviously, but I feel like we put ourselves in a bad position and found a way. We've still got some cleaning up to do."
Clemson's top-ranked doubles team of Marie-Alexandre Leduc and Navarro gave the Tigers the early edge in doubles with a 6-1 victory over Sena Suswam and Dina Chaika on court one. The Cardinals responded with a 6-3 win on court two as Raven Neely and Diana Wong defeated Ally Miller-Krasilnikov and Sydney Riley 6-3. However, Laura Marti and Alex Angyalosy topped Aleksandra Mally and Chloe Hamlin 6-3 at No. 3 to secure the doubles points for the Tigers.
The Tigers extended their lead to 2-0 with a victory at the six-spot as Marti triumphed over Wong 6-3, 6-2. Despite falling 6-2 in the first set, Neely staged a 6-2, 6-4 comeback in the final two sets to capture the victory over Miller-Krasilnikov at No. 4 and move the score to 2-1.
Louisville continued to build momentum throughout the course of the singles matches, taking a 3-2 lead after rallying for back-to-back victories on courts three and five. At the three-spot, Mally downed Riley 3-6, 7-6, 6-2, while Hamlin registered a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 win over Angyalosy at No. 5.
Clemson's Marie Leduc then evened the score at 3-3 with a 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 6-4 win over Suswam on court one. With the match on the line, Jovic mounted yet another comeback for the Cardinals to capture a 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory over Navarro and clinch the 4-3 win for Louisville.
Up next, the Cardinals continue ACC play with a trip to Raleigh, N.C. to play NC State on Friday at noon.
