
Negron Leads Puerto Rico at PALA World Qualifiers

Former Card Monica Negron helped lead Puerto Rico to a second place finish at the 2019 PALA Women's World Qualifiers.
AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Former University of Louisville standout Monica Negron helped lead Puerto Rico to a second place finish at the 2019 Pan-American Lacrosse (PALA) Women's World Qualifiers in Auburndale, Fla.
Puerto Rico finished the tournament with a 3-1 record, winning 15-2 over Argentina and 12-6 over Mexico in pool play. They then defeated Jamaica 15-5 to advance to the championship game where they fell to Haudenosaunee 16-6.
Negron finished the tournament with eight goals and two assists and was named Player of the Match in the win over Mexico.
With the second place finish, Negron and Puerto Rico qualify for the 2021 World Championships at Towson University in Towson, Md.
It marked the first time that Puerto Rico has competed as a senior national team and the first time that they have earned a medal in international competition.
Negron, who played for Louisville from 2011 to 2014, was named All-American and Big East Defensive Player of the Year in 2014, twice was named All-Big East and earned IWLCA All-Region honors all four years. As a senior she helped lead the Cardinals to a Big East championship and their first ever NCAA Tournament win.
She ranks second all-time in program history with 145 ground balls and 92 caused turnovers, third with 164 draw controls and seventh with 67 games played.
Negron is currently the Assistant Director of Student-Athlete Leadership & Development at the University of Louisville.
