Cards close the regular season with a 14-4 overall record and 3-3 mark in ACC play
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Carolin Hoffman's goal with 1:22 left in overtime lifted No. 14 Syracuse to a 2-1 win over No. 5 Louisville in both teams' regular season finale Saturday at Trager Stadium.
Â
"It was obviously a disappointing result for our senior game, which everyone gets pretty excited for," said UofL field hockey coach Justine Sowry. "Syracuse came to play today, and they have a very, very good team. I think that they were a great team collectively together - a lot of pressure; it just wasn't one, it was all of them. Same thing with the ball, their transitions were fantastic. So for us, really, we were more reactive than proactive and stopped working for each other. We had our opportunities, and they took their opportunities. Pretty disappointing, but we need to regroup for next week with ACC tournament."
Â
Louisville (14-4, 3-3 ACC) earned the No. 5 seed in the ACC championship and will face fourth-seeded Syracuse (11-5, 3-3) in the quarterfinals Thursday at 12 p.m. at the Boston College Field Hockey Complex in Newton, Massachusetts.
Â
In Saturday's season finale, the teams played evenly through a scoreless first quarter before the Cardinals broke through with a goal from sophomore Elizabeth Allgeier in the 28th minute of the game. After Louisville earned the first corner of the contest, freshman Julie Kouijzer's initial shot was stopped by Syracuse goalkeeper Sarah Sinck and the rebound glanced off of the stick of freshman Margot Lawn toward Allgeier who sent the ball into the cage for her second goal of the season.
Â
UofL took the 1-0 lead into halftime after outshooting the Orange 4-1 and holding a 1-0 edge in corners.
Â
Syracuse struck with under three minutes remaining in the third quarter when Hoffman connected on a cross from Chiara Gutsche to even the score at 1-1.
Â
Neither team was able to generate much offense in the fourth quarter with the shot tally even at 1-1 and no corners awarded.
Â
With the score knotted at 1-1 at the end of regulation, the game entered a 10-minute, 7v7 sudden-victory overtime period. The teams traded possession, but the Orange eventually converted after Gutsche intercepted a pass and broke down the field to dish a pass to Hoffman who registered her second goal of the game for the 2-1 win.
Â
In the game, Louisville outshot Syracuse 8-5 and held a 2-1 edge in corners. Sinck collected four saves while Hollyn Barr had one stop.
