The Cardinals squared off against Toros del Este of the Dominican Winter League.
JUAN DOLIO, Dominican Republic – The University of Louisville baseball team wrapped up its play in the Dominican Republic with a 11-4 loss against Toros del Este of the Dominican Winter League (LIDOM) Monday in La Romana.
Two-time LIDOM champions, Toros del Este's starting lineup on Monday featured seven players with Major League Baseball experience.
Junior All-American Reid Detmers got the call on Monday and was dominant in his two innings. The southpaw induced a groundout to start the first before reeling off five consecutive strikeouts to end his day.
Louisville jumped on the board in the top of the first inning with Cameron Masterman doubling home Alex Binelas, who had singled with one away. Binelas was at the center of the scoring again in the fourth, singling and stealing his way to third base. Masterman then tallied his second RBI knock of the day to double the Cardinals' advantage.
The Toros took the lead with three in the bottom of the fourth, but Danny Oriente's sacrifice fly in the sixth knotted the game up at three. Trey Leonard gave Louisville the lead again one inning later, singling up the middle to drive in Ben Bianco.
It was all the opposition the rest of the way though, as the Toros plated eight unanswered runs over the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to secure the victory.
Binelas was 3-for-3 in the victory with two runs scored, while Masterman and Leonard were each 2-for-2.
The Cardinals wrap up their international trip on Tuesday, with their arrival back in Louisville set for Tuesday evening.
