Louisville beats Hawaii in season opener
The University of Louisville men's tennis team opened the 2019 dual match season with a 6-1 win against Hawaii.
The Cards swept the doubles matches to take the first point of the day. Senior Federico Gomez and freshman Alex Wesbrooks gave Louisville an early edge with a 6-3 decision against Tristan Martin and Chiaa-Hua Iu at the No. 3 spot. Seniors Brandon Lancaster and George Hedley defeated Blaz Seric and Asad Siyyid 6-4 to seal the point at the No. 1 seed. Senior Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and freshman Fabien Salle posted a 6-4 win over Andre Ilagan and Lucas Labrunie to complete the sweep on court two.
In singles, Gomez quickly gave his team a 2-0 lead after beating Chia-Hua Iu 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4. Freshman Sergio Ramirez notched his first career dual match victory with a 6-3, 6-3 decision against Siyyid at the five-spot.
Hawaii (0-1) got on the scoreboard on court two where Ilagan defeated Morin-Kougoucheff 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 2 slot to make the overall score 3-1.
The match was decided at the No. 3 spot which saw Salle beat Labrunie 6-4, 6-2 to collect his first dual match win. Fellow freshman David Mizrahi made his dual match debut on court six where he beat Martin 7-6(7-3), 7-5. Lancaster, No. 104 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, bested No. 124 Blaz Seric 6-4 in the first set before falling 6-4 in the second. He went on to take the third 6-4 to give Louisville a 6-1 victory.
The Cardinals (1-0) will continue play in the Hawaii Intercollegiate Invitational on Saturday.
