Cardinals Beat Clemson in Five

Cards are 4-0 in the ACC
Senior outside hitter Amanda Green had 17 kills, two aces and 10 digs to lead the University of Louisville to a 3-2 win at Clemson in ACC volleyball action Sunday afternoon.

The Cardinals hit .257 with seven aces and nine blocks and survived 20 service errors in the 25-21, 21-25, 25-18, 23-25, 16-14 win to move to 11-4 and 4-0.  The Cards got 15 kills and two blocks from Megan Sloan, Melanie McHenry added 15 kills and an ace with setter Wilma Rivera contributing 54 assists. Clemson hit .190 but had 10 blocks and only eight service errors. The Tigers were led by Ashtynne Alberts' 14 kills and drop to 9-7 and 0-3 in the ACC.

In the first set, the neither team could get any traction with no lead bigger than three points at any time in the set. Up 21-20, The Cards got kills from Emily Scott and Piper Roe along with two Clemson hitting errors to snag the 25-21 win. UofL hit .279 and had three blocks. Megan Sloan led with six kills.

After a push-and-pull second set, Clemson used a 6-1 run late for the 25-21 win. Â UofL hit a respectable .267 in the set but could not overcome .611 Tiger hitting.

After the break, the Cardinals used a 7-1 run to go up 16-9 on Clemson. The Tigers made a little push late with a 4-1 run to come within three at 20-17 but UofL outscored Clemson 5-1 down the stretch to take the 25-18 win.

In the fourth set, Clemson powered out to a 14-7 lead early. The Cardinals regrouped and put together a 9-1 run to come with one at 22-21. Clemson got to set point on a UofL hitting error but the Cards scored twice more before a kill by Alyssa Deloney gave Clemson the 25-23 win and force a fifth set.

In the fifth set, Amanda Green had seven kills and an ace and the Cardinals needed every single one of them as they locked horns with a very tenacious Tiger team. Clemson went up 9-7 and Cards answered to tie but three straight Cardinal errors gave the Tigers a 12-9 advantage. UofL tied at 13 and then had set point on a kill by Green. Clemson fought back to score after using their last timeout. Green scored again to get to set and match point and a hitting error by Clemson gave UofL the 16-14 win.

UofL returns home to face Duke on Oct. 5 at 5 p.m. ad Wake Forest at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7.
