Cardinals post fourth shutout in the last five games
The eighth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated No. 15 Virginia 2-0 behind goals from sophomore Bethany Russ and freshman Katie Schneider Saturday afternoon at UVA's Turf Field. Senior Ayeisha McFerran collected five saves en route to her fourth shutout in the last five games to help the Cardinals improve to 8-3 and 2-2 in ACC play.
"It is always great to get an ACC win and away from home makes it more impressive," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "I was impressed with our overall defense from the front line to the deep defense. We also worked hard to play to our identity against a talented UVA team that threw some pressure at us. We saw a lot of growth today which is exciting as we move into the final phase of the season."
Virginia (4-6, 1-3) attacked early, owning a 3-1 edge in shots and a 2-0 advantage in penalty corners before the Cardinals capitalized on their first corner of the game with just under two minutes left to play. Junior Carter Ayars pushed the ball to Russ who directed a shot into the left corner of the cage for her fifth goal of the season to put the Cards on the scoreboard with 42 seconds on the clock.
Louisville took the 1-0 lead into the break after UVA held a slight edge in shots (3-2) and corners (2-1) while McFerran posted three first-half stops.
The Cards carried the momentum into the second half, quickly drawing a corner in the fourth minute of the frame. Senior Katie Walsh's initial shot hit the left post, but Schneider was positioned perfectly to tap in the rebound and provide an insurance goal with her third score of the season.
Virginia increased its offense midway through the second half, but McFerran turned away both shots on goal to keep the Cavaliers off the scoreboard.
In the game, UVA held a 7-6 edge in shots and a 4-3 advantage in corners. McFerran (8-3) had five stops while Carrera Lucas (4-5) had two saves for Virginia.
The Cardinals return to action Wednesday when they wrap up their four-game road stretch with a contest at Ball State.
