LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville baseball team registered a 7-5 win over Indiana in Saturday's fall exhibition scrimmage at Jim Patterson Stadium.
The 12-inning scrimmage featured a pair of six-inning segments with the Cardinals dropping a 3-2 decision in the first segment before earning a 5-2 victory in the second segment. The game continued without stoppage for the full 12 innings, but the scoreboard in the ballpark was reset to 0-0 after the completion of the first six-inning segment. Players were allowed to re-enter the game and lineups were adjusted on both sides throughout the 12 innings.
Drew Campbell led the offense for the Cardinals as the junior outfielder was 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs, while Justin Lavey had a pair of doubles, two runs scored and one RBI. Lucas Dunn added two hits, one stolen base and scored a run and Trey Leonard added two hits, scored twice and stole one base. Louisville finished with a 16-8 advantage in hits overall.
On the mound, lefthander Nick Bennett had a strong outing in the starting role as the junior had two strikeouts and allowed just one hit in three scoreless innings. Bryan Hoeing surrendered just one hit in his 1.2 innings of shutout relief while freshman Kerry Wright added four strikeouts in two scoreless innings.
The Cardinals will host intraquad scrimmages into October before closing the fall with the annual Pizza Bowl series in mid-October. Next week, UofL will host its annual Scout Day on Friday afternoon at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Louisville entered the fall with returning seven starters in the batting order as well as 10 pitchers from last year's squad, which finished with a 45-19 record after advancing to the championship round of an NCAA Regional for the seventh straight season. Louisville also registered its seventh straight 40-win season and the 11th in 12 seasons under head coach Dan McDonnell.
