Zach Harting was nominated for Breakout Performer of the Year at USA Swimming's 15th annual Golden Goggles.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Following his bronze-medal performance in the 200-meter butterfly at the Pan Pacific Championships, the University of Louisville's Zach Harting has been nominated for Breakout Performer of the Year at the 2018 USA Swimming Golden Goggles Awards.
The Golden Goggles serves as USA Swimming's annual gala and awards show, honoring the performances of the United States National Team members. This year's event will be held on Monday, Nov. 19 at the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel.
A total of 15 swimmers and five coaches have been nominated for the eight available awards at the 15th annual Golden Goggles based on their accomplishments in 2018, focusing primarily on the 2018 Pan Pacific Championships. The United States led all countries at the event with 45 total medals across pool and open water competition.
After finishing second in the 200 fly at the Phillips 66 National Championships, Harting earned a spot on the United States Pan Pacific Championships team. At Pan Pacs, he won bronze in the 200 fly in a lifetime best time of 1:55.05, which ranks ninth in the world this year. As a result of his performances, Harting will also represent the United States at the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea.
Harting's nomination marks the third time that a University of Louisville swimmer has been nominated for Breakout Performer of the Year at the Golden Goggles. Kelsi Dahlia was nominated for the honor in 2015, while Mallory Comerford won the award at last year's event.
Online fan voting is now open and will close on Friday, Nov. 9. A percentage of the fan vote will count towards the selection of the winners. Proceeds from the event benefit the USA Swimming Foundation, which supports the Make a Splash initiative as well as the United States National Team.
