Brooklynn Rivers scores the game-winner with nine seconds remaining
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Brooklynn Rivers scored the game-winner in the final seconds of regulation to lift the University of Louisville women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Syracuse on Sunday afternoon at Lynn Stadium.

With the win, the Cardinals improve to 9-1-0 (3-0 ACC), their best start to ACC play in program history. The Orange drop to 3-8 (0-3) on the season.

"Certainly wasn't 90 minutes of our finest performance," said UofL head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "I thought the first 45 we were off and uninspired. In the second 45, we were inspired. I get that we're going to have games where we're off for sure, but you always have to have the effort to work yourself out of how much you're off."

Despite a number of opportunities the Cardinals were unable to get on the board in the first half. Louisville controlled the pace offensively, firing off a collective seven shots on goal, but Syracuse's Jordan Harris halted each of the scoring opportunities.

The Cardinals best chance of the half came in the 25th minute as Rivers delivered the ball to Emina Ekic, who broke away from her defender for an open shot, but her attempt was stopped by Harris.

Louisville outshot Syracuse 9-4 in the first half, while the Orange held a 2-1 edge in corners. Callie McKinney and Delaney Snyder paced the Cardinals with two shots apiece. Gabby Kouzelos recorded a save for the lone shot on goal she faced in the half.

The Orange turned up the pressure out of the break, but the Cardinals' defense kept Syracuse from converting on three corner kicks within the opening 15 minutes of the second half.

On the hunt for a goal, the Cardinals heightened their attack on offense as well, nearly capitalizing on multiple attempts. With the score still knotted in a scoreless tie in the 83rd minute, the Cardinals earned two consecutive corners and fired off three shots within the span of two minutes, but were unable to convert.

Refusing to relent, Louisville continued to control possession in search of the win. With time expiring, Maisie Whitsett sent a cross into box to Rivers who launched the ball into the back of the net with nine seconds left on the clock to secure the 1-0 victory for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals finished with a 19-7 advantage in shots, while matching the Orange with six corners. Kouzelos tallied three saves on the day, collecting all three of Syracuse's shot on goal attempts.

Up next, the Cardinals head to Chapel Hill, N.C. on Saturday to take on the No. 5 North Carolina Tar Heels. Match time is slated for 12:30 p.m.
