Wasike Earns Win and Men Finish Second at Commodore Classic

Emmanuel Cheboson places second in men's 8K
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Highlighted by Dorcas Wasike's second-consecutive victory and a runner-up performance by the men's squad, the University of Louisville men's and women's cross country teams turned in a solid performance at the Vanderbilt Commodore Classic Saturday morning at Percy Warner Park.
Following his win at Tennessee, freshman Emmanuel Cheboson continued to impress as he placed second in the men's 8K with a time of 24:41.9, finishing 33.9 seconds behind James Sugira of Eastern Kentucky. Senior Chandler Austin also had a top-10 performance, finishing 10th with a time of 25:15.7. In his season debut, sophomore Albert Kosgei came in 17th-place with a time of 25:33.5. Senior Daniel Fleace's mark 25.58.4 finished 29th, while sophomore Cameron Stephens rounded out the Cards' scorers with a personal-best time of 26:03.6. The Cards finished second in the overall tally with 85 points as EKU took first with 20.
In the women's 5K, Wasike earned her first victory in a multi-team meet with a time of 17:09.4, besting runner-up Purity Sanga of Tennessee Tech by 11.7 seconds. Freshman Ivine Chemutai posted Louisville's second-best time, placing 12th with a run of 17:48.8, while senior Caroline Gosser finished 31st with a time of 18:23.5. In the overall standings, the Cards finished ninth with 202 points, with Ohio State taking the win with 105.
The Cards will remain at home for their next event as they compete in the Greater Louisville Classic at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park on Saturday, Sept. 29.
