Men's Tennis in Final Ohio Valley Region Rankings
June 07, 2018 | Men's Tennis
Cards ranked regionally in team, singles and doubles
The University of Louisville men's tennis team was ranked seventh in the final edition of Intercollegiate Tennis Association/Ohio Valley Region rankings released on June 6. The Cardinals also placed two singles players and a pair of doubles teams among the top 12 in the region.
Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff finished his junior season at No. 7 while Parker Wynn stood at No. 10 upon the conclusion of his sophomore campaign. Morin-Kougoucheff and Wynn teamed for the No. 5 spot in the region and juniors George Hedley and Federico Gomez held down the No. 12 spot.
"I am happy our season was acknowledged by the Ohio Valley Region," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "We had our first national tournament doubles semifinalist as well as having five nationally ranked players in one season. We achieved our second doubles regional championship in program history as well as our first win over a reigning defending national team champion. Lastly none of the players who took part in these achievements are seniors."
The Cardinals completed the 2018 campaign with a 15-11 overall record and a 5-7 mark in ACC play to finish eighth in the regular season standings.
Morin-Kougoucheff posted 19-11 overall singles record and ranked No. 69 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles rankings. The Capbreton, France native earned his second straight All-ACC nod after posting a 13-5 mark in dual matches, including a 7-3 showing against conference opponents while playing mostly at No. 1. He appeared in the national singles rankings seven times during the 2017-18 season and reached as high as No. 53 on April 17.
Wynn, a sophomore from North Richland, Texas, led the Cardinals in singles with overall mark of 25-10, while going 15-5 in dual match action, primarily playing at No. 2. The two-time All-ACC selection spent nine weeks throughout the season in the ITA singles rankings, reaching as high as No. 90 on March 6. He was named ACC Player of the Week after upsetting then-18th ranked Aswin Lizen in the Cards' win over defending national champion Virginia.
Morin-Kougoucheff and Wynn finished the 2018 season with an overall record of 27-11 and went 15-5 at No. 1 in dual match play. They appeared in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national doubles rankings 10 times, reaching as high as No. 6 at the conclusion of the fall tournament season and finished the year at No. 25 after earning an at-large bid to the 2018 NCAA doubles championship.
Hedley (Berkshire, England) and Gomez (Buenos Aires, Argentina) compiled a 10-2 overall doubles record.
