Louisville Men Finish Fourth, While Women Finish Fifth at ACC Outdoor Championships
May 12, 2018 | Track & Field
Kolb, Forrest and Wasike log runner-up finishes for the Cardinals on the final day
MIAMI, Fla. -- The University of Louisville track and field teams capped the 2018 ACC Outdoor Championships with top finishes in the ACC since joining the league in 2014-15. The Cardinal men finished fourth with 71 points, passing their previous best finish of fifth last year. The Louisville women finished fifth with 69.5 points, topping their best finish of sixth in 2015 and 2017.
"Today's competition was a great capstone to our regular season," said head coach Dale Cowper. "Both squads set a new all-time high for points scored at the ACC Outdoor Championships en route to our best team finishes in outdoor since joining the league."
Dorcas Wasike, John Kolb and Makenli Forrest finished as runner-up in their events giving Wasike and Forrest their second medal of the weekend. Damar Robinson wrapped up a third place finish in the triple jump after winning the high jump on Thursday.
Wasike finished second in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:13.70. Despite losing her shoe, finished just .13 of a second off the winner Elly Henes of NC State with a time of 6:13.57. She won the 10,000 meters handily on Thursday night. Teammate Bailey Davis ran her best race of her career. Davis finished fourth with a personal best time of 16:17.44. Wasike earned first team All-ACC honors while Davis earned second team All-ACC honors.
"Dorcas Wasike came back from a terrific 10k race on Thursday to finish as the 5k runner-up," said Cowper. "This young woman is as impressive as I have seen. Tonight she lost a shoe around 3000 meters, kicked the other one off and competed in her socks for the final 2000 meters.
"Bailey Davis also had the race of her life in the 5k finishing in fourth place. Bailey has done such a tremendous job of growing during her time on campus and has elevated her game to a level where she can advance into the postseason. I'm excited to watch her race in Tampa in two weeks. You can never count her out, the young lady simply keeps digging and going to the well long after others have thrown in the towel."
Robinson finished third in the triple jump while Devin Valentine scored points for the Cardinals as well with a seventh place finish. Robinson jumped a season best of 15.84m/51'11 ¾" to earn a spot on the medal stand. Valentine finished with a mark of 15.46m/50'8 ¾".
"Damar Robinson and Devin Valentine were both able to come through with big points for us in the men's triple jump," Cowper said. "Devin has had some of the worst luck at ACC Championships in the past and it was awesome to see him with a big jump tonight."
The Cardinals had runner-up finishes in the men's and women's discus today. Sophomore John Kolb finished second with a personal best toss of 59.15m/194'. Freshman Makenli Forrest also threw a personal best of 55.58m/182'4" to finish second. Senior Natalie Uhl also scored points for the Cardinals in the discus, tossing a personal best of 50.65m/166'2" for an eighth place finish. Both Kolb and Forrest earned first team All-ACC honors.
"John Kolb, Makenli Forrest, and Natalie Uhl all made the best of a challenging facility situation at the throwing venue by notching personal bests," Cowper stated. "John and Makenli were able to finish as the runner-up. These two underclassmen are already closing in on the top position of our all-time best discus throws list so our future is really bright in this area."
The Cardinals will have next weekend off to prepare for the NCAA Preliminaries on May 24-26 in Tampa, Fla.
"As a whole we will continue to be committed to running a full track and field program and look forward to seeing things continue building on the foundation that these groups established," said Cowper.
