Dorcas Wasike Leads Track and Field on Day One of the NCAA East Preliminary
May 25, 2018 | Track & Field
Wasike advances to the NCAA Championships
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Louisville track and field teams began competition at the NCAA East Preliminary at the USF Track and Field Stadium on Thursday. Most events started on time until a weather delay in the evening, that postponed the women's long jump for a while and pushed back the start times of the men's and women's 10,000 meters.
"We had some highs and some lows today in Tampa," said head coach Dale Cowper. "This meet is always interesting to watch unfold because anyone that competes at the best of their ability genuinely has the opportunity to advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene."
Dorcas Wasike led three Cardinals that finished in the top 25 of the women's 10,000 meters. Wasike cruised to the win with a time of 33:46.35. With the first place finish, Wasike advances to the final in Eugene at the NCAA Championships on June 6-9.
"Dorcas was able to cruise throughout the majority of the 6.2 mile race and then changed gears with 300 meters to go," Cowper said. "This is her third 10k race of the season and she just keeps getting better."
Bailey Beery finished 19th for the Cardinals with a personal best time of 34:44.06. Kassidy Manning finished 25th with a time of 35:04.27.
"Tonight's women's 10k was certainly the highlight for us," said Cowper. "Bailey Beery was able to put a great race together and run a new personal best in challenging humidity for such a long race."
Freshman Brooke Raglin ran a personal best in the women's 100 meters with a time of 11.44. She narrowly missed qualifying for the quarterfinals, finishing 24th. She broke Raven Grant's record of 11.46 set at the 2016 Louisville Invitational.
Also on the track, Teague Peck wrapped up his career in the 800 meters. He finished 38th with a time of 1:50.25.
Seniors Oliver Newport and Marcus Jegede closed out their careers in the men's long jump. Newport finished in the top 25 with a mark of 7.38m/24'2 1/2" to finish 23rd for the Cardinals. Jegede finished 33rd with a jump of 7.27m/23'10 1/4".
In the women's long jump, sophomore Alexis Gibbons finished 44th with a mark of 5.64m/18'-6".
The second day of competition will kick off tomorrow morning at 8:45 a.m. with the men's discus. Sophomore John Kolb will be the first Cardinal to compete.
