Blalock and Howell were also named All-ACC.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville women's lacrosse's Caroline Blalock and Emily Howell have been named 2018 IWLCA Division I All Region Second Team, the IWLCA announced today. Both players were also named Second Team All-ACC.
The IWLCAÂ honored 128 student-athletes in Division I with a selection to one of the All-Region teams for 2018. These student-athletes are now eligible to be named to a national IWLCA All-American team. The IWLCA will celebrate the 2018 All-Americans during Divisional All-American Announcement Shows, which will be launched online in mid-June.Â
It marks the ninth consecutive season that Louisville has had multiple players named All Region.Â
A team captain as a freshman, Blalock led the Cards in seven statistical categories, including goals with 43 and hat tricks with nine. She led the team with 2.53 goals per game, 3.24 points per game and 1.41 caused turnovers per game. She ranked fourth in the ACC in caused turnovers per game and fifth with 2.41 ground balls per game.
She scored a career-high five goals vs. Robert Morris and six times scores four goals (Marquette, Butler, Coastal Caroline, Duke, Mercer, Virginia). She was voted ILWomen National Rookie of the Week following her four-goal performance against Virginia.
"Caroline is one of the top freshman in the ACC and one of our go-to players. Despite being a freshman, her character and leadership is outstanding, which earned her a team captain position in her first year," said head coach Scott Teeter. "She has the ability to take over games and make plays when needed. She drew a face-guard against several ACC opponents and was often the key player on opponents' scouting reports. Despite being the focal point of opponents' defenses, she managed to finish in the top 10 in the ACC in several statistical categories."
Also a team captain, Howell led the ACC in ground balls per game, scooping up 2.88 each contest. The senior led the Cardinals with 46 total ground balls this season and her 128 career ground balls rank third in program history. Her 1.06 caused turnovers per game and her 2.44 draw controls per game ranked second on the team.
Against Boston College, she picked up a career high seven ground balls, which also ties for third most ever recorded by a Cardinal in a single game.
"Emily is the heart and soul of our team and she played through a painful foot injury all season long," said Teeter. "With our coaching change, she embraced our staff and led the team through the transition. Her determination was proven when she led the ACC in ground balls per game."
