Men's Tennis Drops Regular Season Finale to Virginia Tech
April 20, 2018 | Men's Tennis
Nicolas Rouanet and George Hedley registered singles wins for the Cards.
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The No. 41 University of Louisville men's tennis team dropped their regular season finale to No. 37 Virginia Tech on Friday afternoon, falling to the Hokies by a mark of 4-2. With the loss, the Cardinals drop to 15-10 overall and 5-7 in the ACC heading into the conference tournament.
"Tough day for us," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "We had some opportunities. Brandon had just won the second set and it looked like he had a lot of momentum going into the third. Parker was up in the third set and it looked like it would be the typical 4-3 match between Louisville and Virginia Tech. The guy came back on Parker and ended the match after we just got a bounce back. I still believe a lot in this team and their ability, we've just got to build their confidence back up."
The Hokies gained the early edge, winning the doubles point with victories on courts two and three. Jason Kros and Abraham Asaba topped Federico Gomez and Brandon Lancaster 6-1 at the three-spot, followed by Mitch Harper and Carlo Donato's 6-4 victory over George Hedley and Fredrik Moe at No. 2. On court one, No. 15 Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and Parker Wynn were trailing by a mark of 6-5 to the No. 61 duo of Henrik Korsgaard and Alexandre Ribeiro.
In singles, Virginia Tech was able to extend their lead to 2-0 with Ribiero's 6-3, 6-1 victory over Gomez at No. 3. Moments later, the Cards got on the board as Hedley triumphed over Freddy Mesmer 6-3, 6-1 on court six. However, No. 53 Morin-Kougoucheff fell to 37th-ranked Mitch Harper 6-4, 6-1 at the one-spot, allowing the Hokies to increase their advantage to 3-1.
Nicolas Rouanet put pressure on the Hokies with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Korsgaard on court four to push the score to 3-2, but Virginia Tech responded with Kros's 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 victory over Wynn at No. 2 to clinch the match.
In other singles action, Lancaster lost his first set by a score of 6-4 to Donato on court five, but battled back to a 7-5 win in the second. He was down 3-0 in the third set before the match was called.
Up next, the Cards travel to Cary, N.C. for the ACC Championships, which will take place from April 25-29.
