Track and Field Teams Win the Louisville Invitational

Cardinals finish with two school records and 10 wins
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville track and field teams both won the Louisville Invitational on Friday afternoon at the Cardinal Park. The women finished with 185.50 points ahead of Purdue with 160 points while the men finished with 197 points ahead of Michigan State with 172 points. Individually the Cardinals finished with two school records and 10 wins.
"We had a great track and field meet today," said head coach Dale Cowper. "This group was able to show that we will come out and be competitive across all event areas. I really believe this is the most complete track and field team we have ever had on campus. We need to get a few more key squad members healthy before hitting the championship season in May, but this group is closing in on some terrific things."
The highlight of the day was Dorcas Wasike's win in the 5000m. She won her third consecutive event while smashing the school record with a time of 16:03.95. Kassidy Manning and Bailey Beery helped Louisville sweep the top three.
For the second consecutive week, Donald McClinton, Jr. set a new school record in the men's 200m dash with a time of 20.91 to finish third. He also finished third in the men's 100m dash with a time of 10.32 (+4.6). Senior Carlos Coleman won the men's 400m with a time of 47.89 while Anthony Crandon finished third at 48.59.
In his season debut in the high jump, Damar Robinson cleared 2.21/7'3" for the win, just shy of his career best mark. On the women's side, Alivia Ash placed third with a season-best mark of 1.70m/5'7".
In the hammer throw, the women took the top two positions. Carsen Cassell won the event with a throw of 60.65m/199', while freshman Makenli Forrest finished second with a toss of with 60.12m/197'3". Mitchell Kessler finished third in the hammer with a throw of 52.84m/173'4". Christian Buckley recorded the first win of the day for the Cardinal men in the shot put with a throw of 17.39m/57'3/4".
Two Cardinals placed in the top three of the women's long jump. Alexis Gibbons finished second with a jump 6.13m/20'1 1/2", while Renate van Tonder finished third with a personal best mark of 6.08m/19'11 1/2".
In the 110m hurdles, Kelsey Heyward finished third with a time of 13.52 (+3.5). While Joe Delgado finished third on the men's side with a time of 14.61 (+2.9). Teague Peck placed second in the men's 800m with a season-best time of 1:52.85.
In the discus, John Kolb won the event with a career best mark of 57.28m/187'11". Christian Buckley finished third with a throw of 50.41m/165'5". On the women's side, Natalie Uhl finished second a personal best mark of 50.18m/164'7".
Emma Ison and Emily Bryan finished second and third in the women's javelin throw. Ison finished with a mark of 40.96m/134'4" while Bryan finished with a toss of 39.20m/128-07. Clay Moss finished third on the men's side with a mark of 45.45/149'1".
Marcus Jegede won the men's long jump with a personal best mark of 7.86m/25'9 1/2". Oliver Newport finished second with a jump of 7.70m/25'3 1/4".
In the triple jump, Devin Valentine won the event with a personal best mark of 15.68m/51'5 1/2". Kaleb Rowe finished second with a season-best mark of 14.62m/47'11 3/4". On the women's side, van Tonder tied for second with a season-best mark of 12.35m/40'6 1/4" (+1.6).
The men's 4x400m relay team of Josh Hall, Delgado, Crandon and Coleman wrapped up the day with a win. The finished with a time of 3:12.26. The Cardinals will have next weekend off before hosting the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational on April 27-28.
"Mother nature gave us a great day to compete and I would like to thank the countless officials and volunteers that helped us run a first class competition," said Cowper. "I was a little worried when we made the decision to move our competition up a day in order to avoid the storm predictions tomorrow. Our officials association was a critical partner and we could not have done this without them."
