MIAMI, Fla. – The University of Louisville track and field teams got off to an impressive start the first day of competition at the ACC Outdoor Championships on Thursday afternoon. The Cardinals finished with two ACC Champions on the day. Both the Cardinal men and women stand in second place, the women picked up 25.5 points while the men picked up 19 points on the first day.
"Both squads got things off to a great start during day one of the ACC Championships," said head coach Dale Cowper. "Joe Delgado, Eric Fox, Holly Hankenson, and Linda Mutter started things off by establishing great positions heading into day two of the multis."
After five events in the decathlon, Joe Delgado holds the lead with 3,952 points. Teammate Eric Fox has a strong hold on third place with 3,641 points. In the heptathlon, Holly Hankenson stands in second with 3,324 points while Linda Mutter is seventh with 3,025 points through four events.
Damar Robinson won his second high jump title in the last three years. He set a new school record with a personal best mark of 2.24m/7'4 ¼". Robinson broke Tone Belt's school record of 2.23m/7-3 ¾ set in 2016. Today's mark is tied for sixth in the nation. Teammate Jerin Allen earned first team All-ACC honors for the second straight year. Allen finished third with a jump of 2.21m/7'3".
"As the day progressed Damar Robinson and Jerin Allen were able to pick up All-ACC first team honors by finishing first and third in the men's high jump," said Cowper. "Damar's winning leap establishes a new school record and we're exciting to see these two continue jumping as the postseason continues."
Redshirt freshman Dorcas Wasike won an ACC title in the 10,000 meters. Wasike finished with a personal best time of 32:46.72, setting a new school and meet record. She broke Holly Knight's record of 33:08.99 set in 2012. Her time currently ranks fifth in the nation.
"Our women's 10k group finished the night off in strong fashion," Cowper said. "Dorcas was simply awesome en route to the individual title. She closed the race with a 65 second final 400 meters and is continuing to earn respect at a national level. Kassidy (Manning), Bailey (Beery), and Caroline (Gosser) showed tremendous poise and effort to finish 8th, 9th, and 10th respectively."
Freshman Makenli Forrest earned first team All-ACC honors in the hammer throw. Her toss of 62.06m/203'7" was good for third place. Teammate Carsen Cassell earned second team All-ACC honors. "The women's hammer was a great competition with six young women that will have the opportunity to challenge for All-American honors later this season. Makenli and Carsen were able to put 10 points on the board and I'm truly impressed with how they competed."
