Track and Field Teams Stand in Second Place After Day Two of the ACC Outdoor Championship

Eric Fox earns the ACC title in the decathlon
MIAMI, Fla. – The University of Louisville track and field team continued their momentum into the second day of competition at the ACC Outdoor Championships on Friday afternoon. Both teams are currently in second place heading into the final day of competition. The Cardinals men have 48 points while the women have 43.5 points with 8 of 21 events scored.
"I'm excited about the way both squads came out and competed today," said head coach Dale Cowper. "We fell short of scoring positions in a few places that I was hoping to gain a couple of bonus points. But we are in a solid position heading into day three of the championship tomorrow."
Holly Hankenson earned first team All-ACC honors for the second straight year. She finished second in the heptathlon. She held her position on the final day finishing with 5,526 points. Linda Mutter finished eighth with 4,987 points.
"Holly got us off to a solid start with a runner-up finish in the women's heptathlon," said Cowper. "Scoring over 5500 points in a heptathlon contested in these conditions is true testament to her determination and grit."
Eric Fox won the decathlon in a tightly contested race. Fox finished with a personal best 7,273 points. He finished second in the final event (1500m) to take the win by two points over Miami's Andreas Christodoulou. Joe Delgado joined Fox on the medal stand with a third place finish. Delgado faced adversity in the pole vault, dropping four spots to fifth. His win in the final event the propelled him to a third place finish with 6,862 points.
"As the day continued, the decathletes gave us intense highs and lows but ultimately we are ecstatic to see Eric Fox crowned an individual ACC Champion! " Cowper stated. "He and Joe were able to combine for 16 huge points."
Christian Buckley earned second team All-ACC honors with a fifth place finish in the shot put. Buckley threw a personal best throw of 17.74m/58'2 ½". Marcus Jegede also earned second team All-ACC honors in the long jump. Jegede finished a jump of 7.62m/25' for a fourth place finish. In the women's long jump, Alexis Gibbons and Renate van Tonder both earned second team All-ACC honors. Gibbons finished fourth with a mark of 6.08m/19'11 ½" while von Tonder finished fifth with a jump of 6.06m/19'10 ¾".
"We saw a number of outstanding performances in the field events as the day went on," said Cowper. "Christian Buckley was able to pick up All-ACC second team honors in the men's shotput, Marcus Jegede, Alexis Gibbons and Renate van Tonder were each able to earn All-ACC second team honors in the long jump as well."
Teague Peck advanced to the 800 meter finals on Saturday. The senior finished second with a personal best time of 1:49.07. Fellow senior Carlos Coleman also advanced to the finals on Saturday. He finished fourth in the 400 meters with a personal best time of 47.09. Both Peck and Coleman will join Martice Moore who advanced to the 400 meter hurdle finals on Thursday.
"Teague Peck and Carlos Coleman showed the tremendous character we have come to expect from them as each advanced to the finals to be contested tomorrow," Cowper said.
The Cardinals will wrap up competition on Saturday afternoon. The day begins with the men's javelin at 11:00 a.m. Running events will start at 5:00 p.m. with the women's 4x100 meter relay.
