Cardinal throwers all record top five finishes in San Diego

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville track and field teams wrapped up the weekend of competition at the Texas Relays and California Collegiate Open on Saturday. The Cardinal throwers all had top five finishes in San Diego with three wins from John Kolb, Carsen Cassell and Makenli Forrest. The Cardinals had three top 10 finishes in Austin.

"Our throws group continued to show progress today in San Diego," said head coach Dale Cowper. "Carsen, Makenli, and John were each able to pick up event titles. I'm excited about the work we have been putting in and I'm confident we will continue to see longer throws as the season continues."

Cassell threw a personal best of 61.73m/202'6" in the hammer for her first win of the season. Forrest finished second with a personal best throw of 60.53m/198'7".

Forrest won the discus with a toss of 53.75m/176'4" for her first win of the season. Lilli Popovich threw a personal best mark of 49.45m/162'3" to finish fourth. Senior Natalie Uhl finished fifth with a personal best throw of 49.33m/161'10".

In the men's discus, Kolb had his second straight win of the season with a throw of 55.14m/180' 11". Christian Buckley finished third with a toss of 50.86m/166' 10". In the men's shot put, Buckley finished third with a throw of 16.91m/55'5 ¾".

Alexis Gibbons finished fourth in the long jump with a season best mark of 6.21m/20'4 ½". Jerin Allen finished sixth in the high jump while teammate Javen Reeves finished ninth. Allen cleared a season best 2.13m/6'11 ¾" while Reeves cleared 2.08m/6'9 ¾". Oliver Newport finished 12^th in the long jump with a mark of 7.32m/24' ¼".

The Cardinals will be back in action next weekend at the Alabama Invitational in Tuscaloosa.
