Cards opens spring season with wins at Oak Ridge
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The University of Louisville women's rowing team opened their 2018 championships season with three wins at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational Saturday at the Melton Lake Rowing Venue. The Cardinals were joined by 11 programs on the opening day of the early-season event.
In the morning session, the Cardinals overcame tough competition from Tennessee and fellow Atlantic Coast Conference rivals Clemson and Notre Dame to grab a trio of wins. The varsity eight crew opened the spring season with a strong win, finishing with a mark of 2:12.515, nearly five seconds ahead of Tennessee. After a third-place finish in the varsity four race, the second varsity crew took first with a time of 6:22.786, followed by a first-place mark of 7:13.234 by the second varsity crew.
The Cards faced two of the nation's top programs in Michigan and Yale in the afternoon session. The increased competition led to the V8+ boat finishing third with a time of 6:24.679, while the remaining crews finished in fourth place. The afternoon set did see the spring debut of the third varsity eight crew, who posted a time of 6:49.707 in the outing.
Competition will continue on Sunday morning with the final session of the Cardinal Invitational. The Cards will open the day's action with races against Miami, Minnesota and Notre Dame, beginning with the V8+ race at 9:14 a.m. Live results will be available on Twitter (@UofLRowing) and HereNow.com.
