John Kolb, Jerin Allen and Dorcas Wasike start the outdoor season with wins
TEMPE, Ariz. – The University of Louisville track and field teams wrapped up the Baldy Castillo Invitational with three wins and eight top three finishes on Saturday afternoon. John Kolb, Jerin Allen and Dorcas Wasike started off their outdoor seasons with wins for the Cardinals.
"This weekend shows us exactly where we are as the squads transition from a strong indoor season to our outdoor campaign," said head coach Dale Cowper. "We have a great deal of progress to make between now and the ACC Championships in mid-May. I believe this group is capable of growing into a very capable team by then."
Sophomore John Kolb started the day off for Louisville with a win in the discus. Kolb finished with a personal best throw of 56.98m/186'11". The mark ranks among the all-time top five performances.
"John opened the day with a big throw in the discus," said Cowper. "He moves into our all-time top five list in the event and shows he has a lot more will be available as the season grows."
In her first career outdoor meet, Wasike registered a win in the women's 3,000m. She finished with a personal best time of 9:18.64. It also sets a new school record for Louisville, giving her school records in both the indoor and outdoor 3,000m. She broke Bettina Bard's record of 9:20.13 set at the 1997 NCAA Championships.
"Dorcas Wasike, John Kolb, and Jerin Allen gave us some highlights today," Cowper said. "Dorcas easily handled the 3000 meter field of competitors in route to an all-time best."
After earning second team All-American honors last weekend, Allen took his first win of the outdoor season in the high jump. He won the event with a mark of 2.11m/6'11".
"Jerin finished the day off with a convincing victory in the high jump," said Cowper. "He made a nice transition from last week's indoor championships and will be in contention to defend his ACC Outdoor title in May."
