Cardinals travel to Clemson to begin postseason competition
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Following a one-week break, the University of Louisville men's and women's indoor track and field teams head south for this weekend's ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships at Clemson University. The meet opens on Thursday, Feb. 22 at 11:30 a.m. and continues through the afternoon of Saturday, Feb. 24.
Louisville will bring 21 men's and 24 women's competitors to Clemson as they look to improve upon last year's performance. In the 2017 meet at Notre Dame, the Cardinal men finished fourth, while the women tied for fifth.
The competition opens on Thursday with the opening portion of the women's heptathlon at 11:30 a.m., followed by the commencement of the men's pentathlon at noon. The evening portion will feature the finals of the men's and women's distance medley races. On Friday, the heptathlon will be completed as the track and field events start before the schedule concludes on Saturday with the 4x400m relay finals.
The top three finalists in each event will receive medals and will earn First-Team All-ACC honors, while the next three finishers will be named to the second team. In the relay event, the members of the winning team will be First-Team All-ACC, with the second team being comprised of the members from second and third-place squads.
Following the ACC Championships and other conference championships, the top sixteen times/marks in the nation will be invited to the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships at Texas A&M in College Station, Texas on March 9-10.
Currently, five Cardinals are in line to attend the championships, all of which are in the field category. Senior Emmonnie Henderson, last season's ACC shot put champion and Women's ACC Indoor Field MVP, is ranked 12th in the shot put with a mark of 17.05m/55'11 ¼". In the long jump, sophomore Alexis Gibbons entered the rankings two weeks ago at Hoosier Hills with a mark of 6.27m/20'7", placing her 14th in the nation.
On the men's side, seniors Javen Reeves and Jerin Allen are ranked in the top 16 in the high jump, highlighted by Reeves' school-record mark of 2.23m/7'3 ¾" at Illinois on Jan. 27. In the heptathlon, redshirt senior Joe Delgado posted a school-record 5,627 points at Michigan on Feb. 2, good enough for the 12th best total in the nation.
ACC Network Extra will broadcast a live stream of the meet on Friday and Saturday with play-by-play announcer Shawn Kenney and sideline reporter Hanna Yates joining 1996 Olympic decathlon gold medalist Dan O'Brien on the broadcast. Coverage will air on Friday from 4:30-8:30 p.m., followed on Saturday from noon until the meet's closing. Live results will also be available online through Flash Results.
