
Women's Swimming and Diving Are Third After Day 1

Molly Fears Wins Bronze, 800 Free Relay wins Silver
After the first day of competition, the University of Louisville women sit in third place at the 2018 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships, earning a silver and bronze Wednesday night at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C.
"Good first session," said Arthur Albiero, UofLÂ head coach. "Great improvement for Molly Fears in the 1-meter board, to go from not scoring last year to a podium finish was incredible."Â

In the 200 medley relay, the Cards foursome of Alina Kendzior (24.51), Mariia Astashkina (27.71), Grace Oglesby (23.22), and Casey Fanz (21.65) combined for a time of 1:37.09 and fifth place. NC State won gold for the second straight year with a time of 1:36.07.

In the 1-meter board, after three rounds, sophomore Molly Fears sat in second place with a 152.40, she held on to the podium, winning bronze with a score of 294.35.  Florida State's Blair Mulka took gold with a score of 317.50 and became the third Seminole in the last four years to win the 1-meter springboard, and Maria Lohman of North Carolina took silver.  North Carolina's Gregory Duncan became the first Tar Heel to win the men's 3-meter board since 1962.

In the 800 free relay, Sophie Cattermole (1:45.12), Mallory Comerford (1:40.26) Rachael Bradford Feldman (1:46.03) and Arina Openysheva (1:45.90) combined for an NCAA A-cut time of 6:56.32 and a set a school record . Virginia won the event with a meet record time of 6:55.77.

After three events in the women's meet, North Carolina leads with 151 points, ahead of Virginia (143), Duke (139), and Louisville (138). Â

Thursday's action gets underway at 10 a.m. with the prelims for the 500 free, 200 individual medley, 50 free, and men's 1-meter, with doors open to spectators at 9 a.m. The finals for those events, in addition to the 200 freestyle relay, will begin at 6 p.m.
