Rowing opens season with 12th annual event
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Following a program-best finish at the ACC Championships, the University of Louisville rowing team opens its new season as it hosts the 12th Annual Red & Black Regatta on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 10:30 a.m. at the G. Garvin Brown III Rowing Center at Waterfront Park on River Road. Saturday's event marks the only home event for the Cardinals during the 2018-19 season.
"We really look forward to this time of year with our annual Red and Black Regatta," said associate head coach Sheila Rinozzi. "It's a great event for the community to come check out our boathouse and be able to see the boats racing up close. It's a really fun Saturday for the entire team, novice through seniors."
The event includes six intra-squad scrimmages and an alumni race, followed by a cookout with the rowers, coaches, families and program alumni. Spectators will be able to watch the team compete at home and learn more about the sports of rowing. The Cardinals will showcase many returners from last year's squad, as well as 12 newcomers to the team.
"I enjoy opening our doors to the public and welcoming them into our family," said assistant coach Ed Oxlade. "It is rewarding to see children and adults get excited about our sport. We are proud to represent our university and our city, so for the community to meet our student-athletes in this setting is a privilege."
"We are able to show our community, family, and friends who might not be able to attend other races a preview of what to expect during the fall racing season," said director of operations Addina Tritle. "This is the first and perhaps, the only time, the community can come out and see us."
The Cardinal Pride Pep Band and Louie the Cardinal will also be in attendance at the regatta. Louisville rowing gear will be on sale throughout the day. Click here for directions to the G. Garvin Brown III Rowing Center.
