Cardinals Fall to No. 11 Virginia in ACC Quarterfinals, 2-1

Louisville falls on the road to the Cavaliers
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –The University of Louisville women's soccer team fell 2-1 at No. 11 Virginia in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals fall to 12-7 on the year while Virginia improves to 15-3 on the season while advancing the semifinal round.
Like the earlier meeting this season, the match was a defensive battle. However, the Cardinals were able to get in the scoring column first. The Cardinals had their first corner of the match, which was deflected out into the field of play. Emina Ekic intercepted the deflection and played a cross into the box. Freshman Sarah Hernandez headed the ball in the near left post for a 1-0 Louisville leads in the 10th minute.
The Cavaliers found the equalizer four minutes later as Rebecca Jarrett dribbled in toward the box before sending the pass in to at the center of the box. Alexa Spaanstra collected the pass and took the shot in past the left post for a 1-1 tie.
Virginia held a 5-2 lead in shots at the half and a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Gabby Kouzelos finished with two saves in the half.
To start the second half both teams traded possession, looking to take the lead. With 17 minutes lefts to play, Virginia was able to take their first lead of the match. The Cavalier's Hanna Kerner sent the ball out wide on the right flank to Spaanstra. Spaanstra served a one-touch ball into the box where Meghan McCool was making a run to the near post and slipped the ball in past the near post for the 2-1 Virginia lead in the 72nd minute.
The Cardinals pressed forward in the remaining minutes looking for the equalizer. The best chance came in the 83rd minute when Ekic took a free kick just outside the box that went just wide of the goal.
The Cavaliers finished the match with a 12-4 shot advantage and a 7-2 corner kick advantage.
The NCAA Tournament bracket will be revealed on Monday, Nov. 5.
