Louisville runners post strong performances at championship preview
MADISON, Wisc. – Powered by another pair of strong showings from junior Dorcas Wasike and freshman Emmanuel Cheboson, the University of Louisville men's and women's cross country teams posted a solid showing Saturday afternoon at the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals at the Zimmer Championship Course.
In the first 6K of the season, Wasike nearly broke her personal record as she finished third with a time of 19:55.5, placing behind the New Mexico duo of Weini Kelati and defending NCAA champion Ednah Kurgat. Wasike's time ranked third among all women's competitors in the two races. Her performance narrowly missed the personal-best mark of 19:54.1 she turned in at last season's ACC Championships at Tom Sawyer Park. Freshman Ivine Chemutai posted the Cardinals' second-best finish with a time of 21:50.9, followed by senior Caroline Gosser's mark of 22:23.1. In the overall standings, Louisville finished 25th with 654 points as New Mexico took the victory with 67.
In the men's 8K, Cheboson pulled off an impressive comeback, moving up from 65th at the 2K mark to finish eighth with a time of 24:00.6. Between both races, Cheboson's time ranked 17th among all runners. Sophomore Albert Kosgei placed 49th with a time of 24:37.7, while senior Chandler Austin came in 72nd place with a time of 24:52.4. The Cards finished 15th in the overall standings with 430 points with BYU earning the team title with 29.
The Cards will turn their attention toward the ACC Championships on Friday, Oct. 26 at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. The women's 6K race will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the men's 8K at 11 a.m. For updates and information, follow Louisville cross country on Twitter at @UofLTrackXC and on Facebook.
