No. 24 Syracuse Visits No. 11 Louisville in Friday Night Fray

Cardinals and Orange will kick off at 7 p.m., ET at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -Â The No. 11 University of Louisville men's soccer team continues its four-match homestand with a pivotal ACC clash against No. 24 Syracuse on Friday at 7 p.m., ET at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium. The match will be will be televised on ACC Network Extra, while live stats will be available at GoCards.com.
ABOUT THE CARDINALS
Ranked 11th in this week's United Soccer Coaches Top 25, Louisville enters Friday's match with a 7-2-2 record after Tuesday's 1-0 win over Georgia Southern. The Cardinals are second in the ACC Atlantic and third overall in the league with 10 points and a 3-1-1 mark. The top four teams in the conference will earn a first round bye and a second round home game in the ACC Championship.Â
Cherif Dieye leads the Cardinals with four goals this season, including two game-winners. Geoffrey Dee and Adam Wilson have three goals each, while Tate Schmitt has two goals and a team-leading five assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Jake Gelnovatch has started eight of 11 matches this season registering three shutouts overall and a 0.95 goals against average.
The Cardinals produced another successful season in 2017 reaching the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Championship for the fifth time in the last eight seasons, including the second straight year, and earning a No. 7 ranking in the final United Soccer Coaches Top 25. Louisville had a 13-2-5 record and was second in the ACC Atlantic with a 5-2-1 league mark.

Syracuse is 6-4-1 overall following a 3-0 win over Ohio State on Monday and 1-3-0 in the ACC after earning a 2-0 victory over Wake Forest last week. The Orange has won three straight matches overall and are ranked 24th in this week's United Soccer Coaches poll. Last season, Syracuse was 6-8-4 overall and 0-6-2 in the ACC.

It's the first time this season the Cardinals have landed outside the top 10 in the poll. Louisville was at No. 6 in the preseason poll and dropped as low as No. 9 on Sept. 11 before rising to No. 7 and then No. 6 in the following weeks.Â
This week, the ACC has seven teams in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25: No. 1 North Carolina, No. 2 Wake Forest, No. 9 Notre Dame, No. 11 Louisville, No. 14 Virginia, No. 17 Duke and No. 24 Syracuse. Earning a preseason top 10 ranking for the second straight year, Louisville was among seven ACC teams in this year's preseason top 25, including five programs in the top 11. Â

Tate Schmitt was among 30 men's soccer student-athletes who excel both on and off the field named as candidates for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Each of the 60 candidates (30 men's candidates and 30 women's candidates) has displayed a strong work ethic in the classroom and on the pitch with 34 returning after earning first-team conference honors, 30 having grade-point averages of 3.5 or higher, nine being on the MAC Hermann Watch List for 2018 and seven returning All-Americans. Outside of academics and athletics, all candidates also have been consistently involved in community service on their campus or in their communities.
Each of the two candidate classes will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one male candidate and one female candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
