Indoor Track & Field Takes Team Titles at Illini Classic
January 27, 2018 | Track & Field
Cards set two school records and finish first in 11 events
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The University of Louisville indoor track and field teams finished the Illini Classic with 11 total wins. Both the men and women's teams won the meet, giving the women their second-consecutive win. The Cardinal women racked up seven total wins, while the men recorded four.
"I am excited about the way both squads handled themselves this weekend," said head coach Dale Cowper. "We were able to pick up 11 event titles, two school records, and two narrow team victories. More importantly, we are beginning to see each team round into shape and our leadership is growing."
Teague Peck and Carlos Coleman led the men on the track. Peck won the 400m with a time of 49.20, while Coleman won the 600m with a personal best time of 1:20.41.
Javen Reeves and Christian Buckley led the men's field events, picking up two of the team's wins. Reeves leaped 2.23m/7'3 ¾" for a school record high jump, tying for the fifth best jump in the nation. Buckley won the shot put with a season best toss of 16.83m/55'2 ¾".
Brooke Raglin and Dorcas Wasike led the women's team on the track. Raglin picked up her second career win in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.60, while Wasike picked up wins in both the 800m and mile run with times of 2:17.06 and 4:55.18.
The women's throws recorded two wins for the Cards. Emmonnie Henderson won the shot put for the third straight week with a season-best throw of 17.05m/55'11 ¼", while Makenli Forrest picked up her first collegiate win in the weight throw with a toss of 18.57m/60'11 ¼".
Gabriela Leon picked up her second career win with a personal record of 4.00m/13'1 ½" in the pole vault. Alexis Gibbons rounded out the field with a jump of 5.83m/19'1 ½" to win the long jump.
Holly Hankenson's second place finish in the 600 meters set a school record with a time of 1:32.51.
"Next weekend's Power 5 Invitational at Michigan will give us another opportunity to take a step forward as we prepare for ACC Championships hosted by Clemson next month," said Cowper.
The Cardinals will be back in action on February 2 at the Power 5 Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich.
