Volleyball Falls at North Carolina 3-2

Melanie McHenry's 18 kills and 14 digs were not enough as the University of Louisville fell 3-2 to preseason favorite North Carolina in ACC volleyball action Sunday afternoon in Chapel Hill.

UNC (4-5, 1-1) won 19-25, 25-18, 18-25, 25-19, 15-12 and hit .227 with 13 blocks and four aces. The Heels were led by Beth Nordhorn and Holly Carlton's 10 kills, with Carlton adding two aces. UofL (7-5, 1-1) got 15 kills from Jasmine Bennett, and 14 from Amanda Green. Molly Sauer had 18 digs.

The Cards used a 6-0 run in the first set to pull ahead of the heels 16-11. UNC made a run to get within four at 21-17 but the Cards finished out with a kills by Jasmine Bennett and two straight by Melanie McHenry for the 25-19 win. The Cards hit .240 with three blocks and two aces in the set. Maggie DeJong led with four kills.

In the second set, UofL had a 7-2 run to take a 17-13 run after trailing early. UNC had to burn both its timeouts but still trailed 19-15. Jasmine Bennett had two kills and a block for the final points of the set and the 25-18 win for the Cards to take a 2-0 set score into the break. UofL hit .269 in the set were led by Melanie McHenry's five kills.

UNC used an 8-1 run and .294 hitting in the third set led by Sydnye Fields' five kills on six swing, s for the 25-18 win. UofL hit just .121 but Amanda Green and Jasmine Bennett did each have four kills.

The Tar Heels slowly pulled away In the fourth set and the Cards trailed 15-10 at the media timeout. Louisville got within three at 17-14 but got outscored 8-5 down the stretch, falling 25-19 and forcing a fifth set. The Tar Heels hit .359 in the set.

The Cards popped out to a 7-3 lead in the fifth set but the Heels managed to tie at 11 on two straight UofL misses. A Melanie McHenry kill tied the set at 12 but UNC ran off three straight for the win.
