Cardinal women earn highest ranking in school history
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville women's cross country team was ranked 28th in the NCAA Division I Women's Cross Country Preseason Coaches' Poll, announced the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Tuesday. The ranking is the highest in program history for the women's team.
"We are excited to see our women's squad opening the preseason ranked 28th by the coaches association," said head coach Dale Cowper. "The rankings are a testament to the work this group has done to put our program on the national map. Our goal for the season is to continue moving the program forward in order to become an ACC contender and high level national representative."
The Louisville women return six runners from last season's team that finished as runner-up at the NCAA Southeast Regional. The Cardinals had a breakout season, advancing to the first NCAA Championship appearance in program history. The Louisville men welcome six newcomers this season after graduating All-American Edwin Kibichiy and all-region performer Calvin Chemoiywo.
The Cardinals begin the 2017 season this weekend as they will run in a dual meet against Tennessee in Knoxville Saturday morning. The men will begin at 9:00 a.m. and the women will race at 9:45 a.m.
