Rinozzi is entering her third season with the Cardinals
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville rowing head coach Derek Copeland announced Friday the promotion of Sheila Rinozzi to associate head coach with the Cardinals. The elevated title for Rinozzi in her third season at Louisville is in recognition of her outstanding work as a member of the rowing staff in the previous two years.
"Assigning Sheila the title of associate head coach was an easy decision as she has already been contributing to the program at this level since the day she arrived," Copeland said. "With our team size and our team culture, it was important that we bring in compassionate coaches to help keep the connection with each and every athlete. Although I had high expectations for Sheila, she came in and contributed positively to the competitive and caring team environment. It is important for our staff to be on the same page, but Sheila has helped us start a whole new chapter for Louisville rowing."
Since Rinozzi's arrival, Louisville has continued to gain speed on the national stage. Along with a top 5 finish in the ACC in 2016 and 2017, the Cardinals have also had 24 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar Athletes, 14 ACC All-Academic team selections, four All-ACC honorees, a 2017 CRCA Second Team All-America selection in Kirsti Harrison and a team GPA of 3.5.
Prior to Louisville, Rinozzi spent two seasons at Indiana, where she was the recruiting coordinator and played a key role in leading the Hoosiers to their first two NCAA Championship appearances finishing 11th in the nation in both 2014 and 2015. She and the other IU coaches were honored as the 2014 National Staff of the Year by the CRCA and were the 2015 Regional Staff of the Year.
Rinozzi joined the IU staff after spending the 2012-13 season serving as a volunteer assistant at her alma mater, Iowa. Before Rinozzi returned to Iowa City, she spent a year as the varsity women's assistant coach at Loyola Academy and the two seasons as the events and operations coordinator for the Harvard University athletic department.
A four-year letterwinner for the Hawkeyes and native of Chicago, Rinozzi graduated from Iowa in 2010 with a degree in Health Sciences. On the water, she was a First Team All-Big Ten selection her junior and senior years as a coxswain for the Hawkeyes. She also spent a summer at the United States Rowing Association as the National Team Programs Intern.
