Cards improve to 6-3 in ACC play
The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated host Clemson 7-0 in an ACC matchup Friday at Clemson's Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.
Â
"I tried to prepare these guys since we had a huge challenge ahead of us because we are on road in the ACC," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "It was a warm Friday night at Clemson, it was their senior day with most of their team being seniors. It was the roughest crowd atmosphere we have faced all year. But these young Cardinals responded to every challenge and played our best road match of the year. I am so proud of them because even though it was a 7-0 score, this match could have been 4-3, but these guys clutched out a lot of big points. We are peaking at the right time. Now we have the ultimate challenge of playing the No. 1 team in America, Wake Forest, in Winston-Salem. We are going to leave everything out there on the court and battle."
Â
The Cardinals (19-5, 6-3 ACC) opened the match by the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. The No. 51-ranked duo of senior Sean Donohue and freshman Parker Wynn took down No. 34 Sam Edwards and Daffra Sanon to give Louisville an early edge. The Tigers evened the doubles tally on court three where Alex Favrot and Robert Dudley beat sophomore George Hedley and Nicolas Rouanet 7-5. The first point of the match came down to the No. 2 spot with sophomore Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and freshman Clement Filho edged Brent Lett and Christian Harris 7-6(4).
Â
In singles action, Morin-Kougoucheff, No. 118 in the ITA singles rankings, quickly added to the lead with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Sanon at No. 1. Hedley beat Edwards 7-6(5), 6-0 to increase the lead to 3-0. The match was decided when Filho bested Harris 6-4, 6-2 at the six-spot. Sophomore Brandon Lancaster added another singles point with a 7-6 (0) decision against Lett at No. 5. Wynn registered a 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 victory over Favrot at the two-spot. Rouanet wrapped up the match on court six where he overcame a 6-4 first-set loss to Dudley and took the next sets by scores of 6-3 apiece.
Â
Louisville (19-5, 6-3) will continue ACC action with a trip to No. 1 Wake Forest on Sunday.
