Freshman Clement Filho picks up a singles win for the Cards
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The University of Louisville men's tennis team fell 6-1 to top-ranked Wake Forest in an ACC matchup Sunday afternoon at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
Â
"We started off a little tentative which can be corrected before the next match," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "They won most of the 6-4, 7-5, 7-6 type of sets. They just never panic in tight situations, which translates to their No. 1 ranking. If you were at the match, you would have seen that we were competitive in seven of the nine matches played. We will get better in these types of situations. Clement continues his hot streak of winning in his position. He is peaking at the right time."
Â
The Demon Deacons (22-1, 9-0 ACC) started the match by taking the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. Wake's Petros Chrysochos and Dennis Uspensky gave their team an early edge with a 6-0 victory over junior Nicolas Rouanet and sophomore George Hedley. Top-ranked Skander Mansouri and Christia Seraphim sealed the point by beating Louisville's No. 51 duo of senior Sean Donohue and freshman Parker Wynn.
Â
In singles, Wake Forest took a 2-0 lead with a win at No. 3 where No. 53 Borna Gojo defeated Wynn 6-2, 6-1. Mansouri, No. 14 in the ITA singles rankings, topped Rouanet 6-3, 6-4 to push the lead to 3-0.
Â
The 39th-ranked Cardinals (19-6, 6-4) got on the scoreboard on court six where freshman Clement Filho topped Alan Gadjiev 7-6 (0), 6-1 to make the score 3-1.
Â
The match was decided on court five when No. 64 Seraphim defeated sophomore Brandon Lancaster 7-5, 6-3. On court one, Louisville's No. 118 Morin-Kougoucheff played No. 2 Chrysochos to a tie in the first set before falling in a 7-2 tiebreaker and lost the second set 6-3. Hedley defeated Uspensky 6-3 in their first set, but the Demon Deacon prevailed 6-1, 6-2 end the match.
Â
Louisville will wrap up the regular season this weekend when the Cards play host to No. 46 Duke Friday at 4 p.m., and face No. 13 North Carolina and IUPUI in a doubleheader Sunday.
