Cards pick up fourth straight win to improve to 8-3 on the season
The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated Georgia State 4-3 Thursday evening at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
Â
"We're a really young team," UofL head coach Rex Ecarma said after the victory. "We don't have a lot of veteran starters on our team, so they've played probably a semester and a half as a starter. It really meant a lot to them to beat a quality, top-30 team today, especially Georgia State. We had so much respect for them. This team went to Florida State, one of the toughest places in the ACC to play at and beat Florida State, and then beat Auburn on the road. This team is capable of doing a lot of great things, not only at home but on the road, so this is a pivotal win for them."
Â
The Cardinals took the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. The 37th-ranked doubles duo of senior Sean Donohue and freshman Parker Wynn improved to 13-1 on the season with a quick 6-0 victory over Zackery Kennedy and Jannis Koeke at No. 1. Junior Ciro Lampasas and sophomore Christopher Kougoucheff came back from down 3-0 to defeat Sebastian Acuna and Andrei Andrukhou 6-4 at the two-spot to clinch the doubles point.
Â
In singles action, freshman Clement Filho defeated Jack MacFarlane 6-2, 6-0 on court six to add to Louisville's lead.
Â
The Panthers got on the scoreboard with Kennedy defeating Kougoucheff 6-2, 6-4 on court one.
Â
Louisville would respond with Wynn defeating Andrukhou at the two-spot 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 to extend the Cardinals' lead to 3-1. Junior Nicolas Rouanet defeated Koeke 6-3, 7-5 on court three to seal the victory at 4-1.
Â
GSU captured a point with a victory on court four as Quentin Coulaud defeated George Hedley 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
Â
UofL (8-3) welcomes Toledo at 10:00 a.ma and Tennessee Tech at 6:00 p.m. for a doubleheader at Bass-Rudd Tennis Center on Saturday.
