Swimming Heads to USA SC Nationals

Cards send a cadre of competitors to Columbus
The meet will begin on Wednesday, Nov. 29 with a relay-only session at 6 p.m. ET. For the remaining three days of competition, Thursday, Nov. 30 through Saturday, Dec. 2, prelims will start at 9 a.m. ET, followed by finals at 5 p.m. ET. There will be three heats of finals for each event, with the top-eight swimmers from the preliminary session qualifying for the championship final.

In addition to the Cardinals, other collegiate teams such as Ohio State, the University of Kentucky, the University of Florida, the University of Pittsburgh, and the University of Cincinnati will also be sending select athletes to compete at the 2017 Winter Nationals.

The Cardinals have at least one swimmer who is seeded within the top-10 in each event, while the Louisville women rank first in each of the five relays. Mallory Comerford boasts the top seed in both the 200 and 500 free and is sitting second in the 50 and 100 free, closely behind 2016 Olympian Olivia Smoliga. Also ranking within the top-three are Rachael Bradford Feldman in the 200 IM (2nd), Etay Gurevich in the 400 IM (3rd), Zach Harting in the 100 (2nd) and 200 (3rd) fly, Alina Kendzior in the 100 back (3rd), Marcelo Acosta in the 1650 free (2nd), Andrej Barna in the 100 free (3rd), Carlos Claverie in the 200 breast (2nd), and Grace Oglesby in the 200 fly (3rd).

In the NCAA national rankings, multiple Cardinals remain in the top-10 within Division I. Comerford leads Louisville with the No. 1 spot in the 100 free (47.00), while also posting the No. 2 time in the 200 free (1:41.70) and the No. 5 (22.04) time in the 50 free. In the 200 fly, Oglesby is seventh with a 1:55.05. The Louisville women also have four relays in the top-10, including their fifth-ranked 200 free relay (1:28.72), 800 free relay (7:06.36), and 400 medley relay (3:32.65) and the No. 9 200 medley relay (1:38.31). On the men's side, Acosta holds the No. 2 time in the 1650 free (14:45.42) and the No. 3 time in the 1000 free (8:57.04).

University of Louisville alumni, Kelsi Worrell Dahlia, Andrea Cottrell, Grigory Tarasevich, and Joao DeLucca are also slated to compete at the 2017 Winter Nationals. Worrell is ranked first in both the 100 and 200 fly. Cottrell is seeded second in the 200 breast, while Tarasevich holds the second position in both backstroke events.
