Cards have three doubles teams, two singles players ranked
The University of Louisville placed two singles players and three doubles teams in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings released on November 15.
Junior Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and Parker Wynn represent the Cardinals in the singles rankings and as a doubles team while Wynn also pairs with senior Ciro Lampasas in doubles. Juniors George Hedley and Federico Gomez are making their debut as a nationally-ranked doubles team.
"After our successful season last year, I decided to play the toughest possible fall tournament schedule," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "I realized it could make or break the team. We played an array of elite college events. In the beginning of the semester, we were getting beat up a little, then by the middle of the semester, we were holding our own against the nation's best. At the end of the semester, we were playing our best."
Morin-Kougoucheff (Capbreton, France) stands at No. 75 in the current singles rankings, dropping one spot opening the fall season at his career-best No. 74. The 2017 all-ACC selection is making his fifth appearance in the national rankings after posting a 6-5 record in the fall.
Wynn (North Richland Hills, Texas) is rated No. 119 after going 10-5 in the fall season. The sophomore 2017 all-ACC team member was ranked No. 90 in the ITA preseason rankings in September.
The duo of Morin-Kougoucheff and Wynn catapulted up to No. 6 in the doubles rankings after standing at No. 29 in the preseason edition. The pair is coming off of an impressive fall season, posting a 12-5 record which included winning the Ohio Valley Regional title, a semifinal showing at the ITA National Fall Championships and a runner-up finish in the ITA All-American consolation draw.
Louisville boasts another top-25 doubles team as the tandem of Wynn and senior Ciro Lampasas (Houston, Texas) stands in at No. 24 after tallying a perfect 4-0 record in the fall.
George Hedley (Berkshire, England) and Federico Gomez (Buenos Aires, Argentina) round out the Cardinals' ranked pairs at No. 46. The duo of juniors compiled an impressive 9-2 mark in the fall and took home the Vanderbilt Commodore Scramble doubles title.
"As a reward for our tough schedule, three of our doubles teams became nationally ranked," said Ecarma. "I think this is the first time in program history we have two doubles teams in the top 25 at the same time. I also think this is the only the second time we have had three doubles teams in the same rankings. We are only one of two teams (Florida) that have three or more ranked doubles teams. Chris and Parker remained in the national singles ranking as well. So Louisville tennis owns five spots in the singles and doubles national rankings for only the second time in program in history. I am proud that this group of players used the opportunity that this schedule gave them to make a name for themselves nationally."
