Cards score a season-high six goals
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Six different Cardinals scored while Ayeisha McFerran and Hollyn Barr combined for a shutout to help the ninth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team close the regular season with a 6-0 win against Ohio Sunday afternoon at Trager Stadium.
Â
"The first half was not very good, we weren't really paying attention to the details," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "There were elements of the game that we wanted to take care of… they came out in the second half and put together a really nice performance. It was a total team effort, and it was nice to get Hollyn Barr in there at keeper and preserve the shutout as well. We started to play some really nice hockey in the second half, so I'm happy with that."
Â
The Cardinals (12-6) got on the scoreboard in the eighth minute of the game. Sophomore Minout Mink connected on penalty corner assists from freshman Marisa Martin Pelegrina and Marigrace Ragsdale to notch her team-best ninth goal of the season.
Â
Louisville took the 1-0 lead into halftime after outshooting Ohio 16-2 and owning an 8-1 advantage in penalty corners.Â
Â
In the second half, the Cardinals intensified their attack, using 17 shots to produce five goals. Six minutes into the period, Ragsdale delivered a shot that was stopped by Ohio's Alex Pennington, but sophomore Whena Munn was there to push the rebound into the cage making the score 2-0.
Â
Three minutes later, freshman Alli Bitting received a pass from fellow freshman Sarah Sabaluski, dribbled into the circle and delivered a reverse stick shot for her first career goal to put the Cards up 3-0. Louisville added to the lead midway through the half as Martin Pelegrina dished out her team-best 10th assist of the season with a cross to Ragsdale who slotted in her sixth goal of the year.
Â
Louisville tacked on a pair of goals in the final two minutes of the game. Senior Abby Grimes used penalty corner assists from Bitting and Ragsdale to score her sixth goal of the season with 1:22 left in the game and freshman Madison Walsh deflected Bitting's shot with 12 seconds left on the clock for the 6-0 final.
Â
Ragsdale scored a goal and added two assists while Grimes also scored in her final regular season home game. Fellow senior co-captain Nicole Woods led the team with five shots on goal and helped the Cards hold Ohio to four shots in the game. The Cardinals tallied a season-best six goals 33 shots with 24 of them on goal.
Â
"This senior class has had a great successful career, three earning NCAA tournament berths and representing our team within the ACC," said Sowry. "They're all three great leaders, very competitive, and they wanted to put together a great performance this weekend. They're even more motivated for next week at the ACC Tournament. Our team is excited for the opportunity against Syracuse, we're looking forward to winning that first game to move on to the second."
Â
The Cardinals will return to action on Thursday, Nov. 2 when they take on No. 12 Syracuse in the quarterfinals of the ACC Field Hockey Championship at Trager Stadium. UofL finished the regular season with a 4-2 record in ACC play- the most conference wins since joining the ACC in 2014. After finishing tied for second with Duke, the Cards were seeded third and while the Orange earned the No. 6 seed.
