Women's Swimming Sits in Second After Day 1 at SMU Classic

Molly Fears and Mallory Comerford picked up wins
Diver Molly Fears and NCAA Champion Mallory Comerford each picked up a win during Day 1 of the SMU Classic. The University of Louisville is sitting in second  place with 163.5 points just under five points behind leader Southern California which leads with 168, Michigan is in third with 161. UCLA is fourth (129.5) followed by Miami (109) and SMU (106).

Each of the six teams at the SMU Classic has a roster comprised of nine student-athletes (eight swimmers, one diver). There are two heats per event with each team entering one swimmer per heat; the team's best swimmer goes in the championship final.

The Cards won the first event of the night when Alina  Kendzior (52.60), Mariia Astashkina (1:00.52), Mallory Comerford (50.73), and Lainey Visscher (48.80) combined to post a 3:32.65 in the 400 medley relay.

Rachael Bradford-Feldman touched third in the championship heat of the 400 IM with a 4:11.86. Grace Oglesby posted a 4:19.27 to take third in the Consolation heat. The event was won by Maggie Aroesty of USC, who went 4:10.18.

Mallory Comerford set a new meet record when she won the 200 free in 1:41.70. Arina Openysheva placed second in the consolation heat with a 1:46.42.

Lainey Visscher touched second in the championship heat of the 50 free with a 22.68, just edged by USC's Marta Ciesla's 22.63. Casey Fanz won the consolation heat of the 50 free by more than a half second with a 22.64. Â The event was won by USC's Marta Ciesla, who went 22.63.

Molly Fears won the 1-meter diving with a score of 260.00, just out-scoring Wally Layland of Miami's score of 259.15.

In the championship heat, Grace Oglesby placed second with a 52.66 in the 100 fly. Lainey Visscher was 9th overall with a 54.90. The event was won by USC's Louise Hansson.

In the 100 back, Alina Kendzior placed third with a 53.02 in the championship heat. Casey Fanz touched the wall in a time of 55.56 in the consolation final. Clara Smiddy of Michigan won the event with a time of 52.55.

Mariia Astashkina went a 1:01.25 to place third in the 100 breast championship heat. Rachael Bradford-Feldman raced to a time of 1:02.05 in the 100 breast in the consols. Riley Scott of USC won the event with a time of 59.56.

The team of Mallory Comerford (1:43.33), Arina Openysheva (1:45.80), Casey Fanz (1:48.76), and Rachael Bradford Feldman ( 1:48.47) took second in the 800 Free Relay with a 7:06.36. Michigan won  with a blazing time of 7:00.71.

The SMU Classic concludes tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 14) at the Westside Aquatic Center. The first event begins at 6:30 p.m. CT.
