Cards register fourth straight win

LOUISVILLE, Ky. –University of Louisville field hockey team defeated the Central Michigan 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Trager Stadium.

Sophomore Minout Mink tallied her team-best sixth goal of the season and senior Nicole Woods notched her fifth goal as the Cardinals (8-4) collected their fourth straight victory and improved to 6-0 on the season at home.

The Cardinals controlled the pace for the entirety of the first half, outshooting the Chippewas 16-0. Central Michigan's staunch defense kept Louisville at bay until the 25th minute when Mink took a reverse stick shot from the top of the circle that sailed into the net, giving the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.

Mink led the Cardinals in the first half with six shots and one goal, followed by Taylor Stone, Marigrace Ragsdale, and Madison Walsh with two shots apiece. Louisville also held a 4-0 edge in corners.

Louisville continued to apply strong offensive pressure through the second half, tallying 11 more shots and five corners. Despite the shot discrepancy, the Chippewas (0-11) were able to keep the Cardinals from scoring for much of the second half. However, Woods was able to increase Louisville's lead to 2-0 in the 58th minute with a goal off of a reverse stick shot from the top of the circle.

The Chippewas had a scoring opportunity in the 67th minute, but Emily Barber's s shot soared wide of the net, allowing the Cardinals to maintain their two-goal lead and seal their victory over Central Michigan.

"I think Central Michigan played well," said head coach Justine Sowry. "They had good energy, they defend well in numbers. I think they're better than what their record shows, and certainly their goalkeeper had an outstanding game."

Collectively, the Cardinals outshot the Chippewas 27-2 and held a 9-0 edge in corners. Mink finished the afternoon with eight shots and one goal, while Woods fired four shots and one goal. Central Michigan goalkeeper Lily Amadio registered 15 saves for the Chippewas.

The Cardinals will be back in action on Friday at 6 p.m. when they hit the road for an ACC matchup at No. 6 Boston College. Louisville will close the weekend at New Hampshire.
