Taylor Stone scores twice, Ayeisha McFerran posts a season high seven saves to help lead the Cards past BC
Taylor Stone scored a pair of goals and Ayeisha McFerran collected seven saves to help lead the 11th-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team to a 4-1 win over host eight-ranked Boston College in an ACC matchup Friday evening at BC's Field Hockey Complex.
Â
With their fifth straight win, the Cardinals improve their record to 9-4 and 3-1 in conference play while Boston College drops to 8-5 (0-5 ACC).
Â
"Tonight we came out to play with good energy and intensity," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "We absorbed the pressure at critical moments. Boston College attacks with speed and we were able to handle the numbers coming at us quite well. On the flip side it was great to capitalize tonight against a great ACC opponent."
Â
The Cardinals struck first in the eighth minute of the game when sophomore MInout Mink dribbled into the circle and delivered a reverse stick shot to the left post for her team-best seventh goal of the season.
Â
The Eagles continued to attack throughout the half, but the Cardinals defense stood strong with McFerran picking up two stops. Louisville took advantage of its second shot of the half when senior Nicole Woods directed a shot toward freshman Madison Walsh who knocked the ball past Dawson for her second goal of the season.
Â
Louisville took the 2-0 lead into halftime despite the Eagles holding a 6-3 advantage in shots and a 2-0 edge in penalty corners.
Â
The teams continued to battle in the second half with BC owning a 7-6 edge in shots and both teams drawing two corners apiece.
Â
Midway through the second half, the Cardinals earned a pair of back-to-back corners. After the second corner, a penalty stroke was called when Stone's shot on goal went off of a Boston College defender's foot. Stone stepped up to the line and drilled a shot into the left corner of the cage.
Â
Eleven minutes later, the Cardinals were awarded another penalty stroke. Stone toed the line again and converted on her third stroke attempt in the last three games. The junior's fifth goal of the season increased Louisville lead to 4-0.
Â
The Eagles got on the scoreboard after they earned a corner in the closing seconds of the game. With no time remaining on the clock, Lucy Lytle deflected Frederique Haverhals' shot for the 4-1 final.
Â
McFerran (5-3) posted a season-high seven saves in the contest while Sarah Dwyer had three stops for Boston College. In the game, BC outshot the Cardinals 13-9 and held a 4-2 edge in corners.
Â
Louisville will wrap up the weekend at New Hampshire Sunday at 12 p.m.
