Cards advance to Monday's round as one of the top 15 teams
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The No. 30 seed University of Louisville men's golf team is moving on to the fourth round of stroke play in the 2016 NCAA Championships after finishing the final round in a five-way tie for 14th place. The tournament is taking place at the par-70, 7,014-yard Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.
The Cardinals fired a 294 (+14) on Sunday, bringing their three-day total to 867 (+27) and putting them in a tie for 14th place with Oklahoma, TCU, Clemson and Georgia.
Louisville and Oklahoma advanced to Monday's final round of stroke play due to the tournament's tiebreaker rules, which determine the advancing teams based on the aggregate total of the first three rounds' non-counting scores.
The top 15 teams and top nine individuals not on those teams after 54 holes of stroke play moved on to compete in the last round of stroke play. Following Monday's round, the top eight squads will advance to match play competition on Tuesday.Â
"The golf course was much more difficult today," head coach Mark Crabtree said. "We struggled today, but we were able to catch a good break and were able to advance to the next round."Â
"I'm proud of these guys to go in as the No. 30 seed in the tournament, but we finished as one of the top 15. It was a great effort and I'm looking forward to playing on Monday."
No. 8 seed Vanderbilt leads the tournament with a three-round 845 (+5). No. 2 Texas stands second at 847 (+7), and No. 3 USC sits in third with an 850 (+10). No. 12 LSU is in fourth and No. 20 Oregon is in fifth, posting an 851 (+11) and an 852 (+12), respectively.
Freshman Simon Zach was the top player for the Cardinals on Sunday, firing a two-over par 72. Starting on the back nine, Zach birdied two of his first six holes to get off to a fast start, but shot over par for the day after recording one double bogey and two bogeys for the round. He is tied for 85th after shooting a 10-over par 220 (71-77-72).Â
Three players were 4-over par during the early morning round on Sunday in senior Robin Sciot-Siegrist, freshman Keegan de Lange and sophomore Erik Dulik.
Sciot-Siegrist and Dulik are tied at 6-over par and sit in 50th place after the first three rounds.Â
Freshman Keegan de Lange is at 10-over par and tied for 85th place heading into Monday's round.
Junior J.D. Lehman shot an 8-over par 78 on Sunday and is tied for 125th place at 15-over par.
The Cardinals are paired with Florida and Oklahoma on Monday and will tee off on No. 10 at 2:30 p.m. ET.
