Robin Sciot-Siegrist leads Cards by shooting 2-under par 68
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - For a moment on Saturday at the Eugene Country Club, the University of Louisville men's golf team had its opportunity to shock the tournament field at the 2016 NCAA Golf Championships in Eugene, Ore.
Entering the day in a five-way tie for 19th-place and nine shots off the lead, the Cardinals made a spirted run into the top five, but sputtered over the last few holes to end the second round in a tie for 12th place with Florida at 571. Louisville inched to as close as four shots after the first nine holes and were 4-under par for the round, but the Cardinals dropped six shots on the back nine to finish at 2-over for the day.Â
The Cardinals shot a 282 on Saturday to sit 10 shots behind Vanderbilt, who leads the field at 3-over par after shooting and even-par 280. Southern Californai is two shots back at 5-over par (565), while Arkansas is third at 6-over par (566) and Oregon and LSU are tied for fourth at 8-over par (568).
"We received outstanding play from our guys," head coach Mark Crabtree said. "Robin (Sciot-Siegrist) responded as we expected him to do in this setting by shooting under par. I'm very proud of Eric Dulik for his round and what he accomplished for our team."
An all-ACC performer and two-time league champion, Robin Sciot-Siegrist responded from his 4-over par round on Friday, with a 2-under par 68 to help the Cardinals move up seven spots on the afternoon.Â
After bogeying the first hole, Sciot-Siegrist would birdie the next four holes to start the first five holes at 3-under par. After a par on No. 6, Sciot-Siegrist bogeyed the seventh hole, but pared the next 11 holes to end the round tied for 35th-place and sits seven shots off the lead.
Sophomore Erik Dulik was the suprise player on the day. After shooting a 3-over par 73 on Friday, Dulik carded a 1-under par 69 to also sit in a tie for 35th-place. Dulik opened the round with four birdies on the first nine holes, but his momentum slowed with a critical double bogey on No. 7.Â
Freshman Keegan de Lange, who shot a 75 on Friday, battled back with a 10over par 71 to finish in a tie for 81st-place heading into Sunday's final round. De Lange had three birdies on the front nine and one on the back, and was also hurt with a double bogey on No. 11.
J.D. Lehman shot a 4-over par 74 and is tied for 93rd place, while Simon Zach, who entered Saturday's round at 1-over par, carded a 7-over par 77 to end the day in a tie for 101st-place.
Sitting 10 shots off the lead heading into the final round, Crabtree knows his team has its work cut out for them, but is excited about where his young team is at right now.
"I love the chemistry of this group," Crabtree said. "I'm very excited to jump back on the course on Sunday and put together another solid round of golf."
The Cardinals will tee off at 10:55 a.m. (ET) Â off of No. 10 and will be paired with California and South Carolina.
