May 25, 2016 | Men's Golf
Cards are making their third championship appearance and the first since 2008.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's golf team will begin play at the 2016 NCAA National Tournament in Eugene, Oregon on Friday, May 27. The Cardinals are seeded 30th in the 30-team field and will play with No. 28 Houston and No. 29 TCU in the first two rounds. Louisville will begin play at 11:50 Eastern time on Friday at the tenth tee.
The 30 teams will play three rounds, Friday-Sunday at the par 70 Eugene Country Club Course that was designed by Robert Trent Jones in 1965. After three rounds the field will be cut to the top 15 teams and six individuals. After four rounds the individual champion will be crowned and the top eight teams will advance to match play. The quarterfinals and semifinals of match play will be completed on Tuesday and the National Championship match will be Wednesday, June 2.
"It's great for the guys to go play for the national championship," head coach Mark Crabtree said.. "We have guys on this team who have never been to that part of the country. They will see some scenery. They will play golf on a great course against 29 other great teams. We are excited to get out there and go play."
Crabtree's team advanced to the NCAA Championships -- the first since 2008 -- after finishing fourth at the Stillwater Regional on May 16-18l. Playing Karsten Creek, one of the most difficult courses in the country, the Cardinals shot 43-over par as a team, but battled through difficult weather conditions and the course to advance.
Overall, this is the third time Louisville has reached the NCAA National Tournament, finishing a school-best 10th in 2008 and 27th in 2007.
Despite the high scores, the Cardinals had three players finish in the top 20. Senior Robin Sciot-Siegrist and freshman Keegan de Lange tied for 10th after shooting a 7-over par 223.
"We are excited for this opportunity," de Lange said. "We would like to go as far as possible, but we know we have to go out there and do our best. We are a young team and the team is starting to work well together. We are looking forward to getting out there and see how we stack up against a very good field of teams."
Simon Zach, another rookie, tied for 17th after shooting 10-over par 226 and had the team's only round under par when he fired a 1-under par 71 on the tournament's final day.
The Cardinals have enjoyed a solid spring with a pair of second-place finishes at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate and the Clemson Invitational, while also finishing fourth at the regional.
Sciot-Siegrist, one of the top 50 players in the country, will lead the Cardinals into the NCAA Championship on Friday. Entering play with a school-best 71.58 stroke averahe, this will be his second appearance in the championships after playing as an individual last season. The native of Rueil-Malmaison, France, is a two-time all-ACC and league champion, who will finish his career with the top career stroke average in school history.
