Senior Alex Gornet earns ITA Ohio Valley Region Arthur Ashe and Most Improved Player Awards
The University of Louisville's Alex Gornet has earned the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Ohio Valley Region Arthur Ashe and Most Improved Player Awards.
"I feel very happy for Alex to win two awards from the Ohio Valley Region," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "The first being the Arthur Ashe Leadership Award. I have always said that Alex was a great role model on campus and the regional committee saw that as well. Alex is our third Regional Ashe Award Winner joining Sebastian Stiefelmeyer and assistant coach Jakob Gustafsson. The Most Improved Player award signified his improvement over the course of four years. He went from our No. 5 player to our No. 1 player and was ranked third in the region."
Gornet, a senior from Louisville, Ky., was all-ACC Conference third team selection in 2016 after posting 21 singles wins including nine in dual matches playing mostly at No. 1. The team co-captain also registered 16 doubles wins, teaming with fellow senior Jeffrey Brown to appear as high as No. 35 in the ITA doubles rankings.
Gornet, a four-year starter, finished his career ranked 10th on Louisville's all-time singles wins list with 96 and tallied 80 doubles victories.
The ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award
The ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award recognizes outstanding individuals in all divisions at the regional and national level. This award which dates back to 1982, goes to NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and JUCO men's and women's players who have exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.
In addition to his athletic achievements, Gornet has also been a leader off the court as a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Council. The chemistry major is a three-time ITA Scholar Athlete and a 2014 CoSIDA/Academic All-District team member. He has garnered academic accolades in three different conferences including All-ACC Academic Team and honor roll selection, American Athletic Conference team (2014) and BIG EAST academic team (2013). Gornet was also named to the Athletic Director's honor roll in each of his semesters.
