Cards sweep doubles and singles
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated Murray State 7-0 Friday morning at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cardinals (7-5) will return to action in the second half of Friday's doubleheader at 5 p.m. when second-ranked Virginia visits the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center for their ACC opener.
The Cards swept through doubles to take the first point of the match. The tandem of senior Jeffrey Brown and Christian Haushammer cruised to a 6-0 win over Javier Villar and Srdjan Trosic at the three-spot. The freshman duo of Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and George Hedley beat Will True and David Hess 6-1 to clinch the first point. Senior Alex Gornet and junior Sean Donohue completed the sweep with a 6-2 win over Marcel Ueltzhoeffer and David Schrott 6-2.
"It started with good doubles," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "We changed up the lineup a little bit and it worked well so it gave us a little bit of versatility with our doubles lineup, I'm really proud of them. Especially No. 2 - they're 4-0 and they are really leading the way for us."
Donohue quickly gave the Cards a 2-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Anjan Kashyab on court six. Hedley followed with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Trosic to make the score 3-0. On court four, freshman Carlos Longhi Neto secured the win with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over David Schrott. Freshman Michael Quang topped David Hess 6-0, 6-3 at the five spot to increase the lead to 5-0. Gornet picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win over True at the No. 1 position and freshman Brandon Lancaster wrapped up the match with a 7-6, 6-4 decision over Ueltzhoeffer.
"In singles, I really like what most of the guys did," said Ecarma. "I think four of them won their first set 6-0 and they really handled their business professionally and efficiently against a competitive Murray State team. After not playing for 19 days, they came out sharp and really executed, so I'm really happy with that."
