Cards score two runs on Smith's double and hold on to beat Cavaliers 2-1
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Senior Hailey Smith connected on a two-run double in the third and junior Maryssa Becker picked up her fifth-straight win as University of Louisville softball team held on to beat Virginia 2-1 to complete an ACC series sweep. Louisville improves to 19-6 (5-1 ACC).
The teams played through two scoreless innings before the Cardinals took a 2-0 lead in the third. Freshman Lillie Goetz and sophomore Jenna Jordan registered back-to-back one-out hits and Smith sent a double to centerfield to bring both runners home.
The Cavaliers (8-21, 0-6) got a run back in the home half of the third when Allison Davis led off with a double, took third on a wild pitch and crossed the plate on Kaitlin Fitzgerald's sacrifice fly to make the score 2-1.
Louisville had an early scoring opportunity when Smith drew a one-out walk and hits by senior Brittany Sims and junior Jordan McNary loaded the bases with one out. Sophomore Sidney Melton's fielder's choice saw Smith out at the plate. Virginia pitcher Erika Osherow delivered a strikeout to hold the Cards at bay.
After allowing a two-out single to Aimee Chapdelaine in the fourth inning, Becker went on to retire the next eight batters until the bottom of the seventh when Chapdelaine delivered a two-out double to place the tying run in scoring position, but Becker got McKall Miller to ground out to end the game.
Becker (9-5) allowed one earned run and scattered three hits while striking out four in a complete game effort. Jordan went 2 for 3 with a run and Sims was 2 for 3. Smith finished batting 1 for 2 with both of Louisville's RBIs.
Osherow (6-13) took the loss after giving up two earned runs on nine hits and striking out three in 7.0 innings. Chapdelaine went 2 for 3 to lead the Cavaliers at the plate.
Louisville returns to action next weekend when the Cards play host to ACC opponent North Carolina State in a three-game series at Ulmer Stadium. The teams will meet in a doubleheader on Friday and a single game on Saturday.
