Both teams earn academic honors while Kibichiy and Kipkoech earn individual honors
LOUISVILLE, KY. -- University of Louisville cross country runners Edwin Kibichiy and Japhet Kipkoech were both named U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic honorees on Friday. Both the Louisville men's and women's cross country teams earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors.
In total, there were 160 women and 90 men who earned All-Academic Individual honors. In order for a student-athlete to qualify for the award, they must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25, and finished in the top-25 (or 10 percent) at regionals or as an All-American at the national meet.
Kipkoech and Kibichiy were instrumental in helping Louisville secure its first NCAA Southeast Regional Championship this past fall. The two led the Cardinals to a seventh-place showing at the NCAA Championships held at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park.
A junior public health major from Kapasbet, Kenya, Kibichiy earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors after leading the Cardinals at the Southeast Regional when he clocked a career best of 29:14.6 and a third place finish.
The senior political science major from Keringet, Kenya, Kipkoech earned USTFCCCA All-Region and All-ACC honors after he posted three top-5 finishes including a victory at the Vanderbilt Invite.
