
Track and Field Opens Season With Three Wins and a New School Record

Henderson, Gibbons and Allen lead the Cardinals in the season opener
Nashville, Tenn. – The University of Louisville track and field teams got off to a great start to open the 2016-17 season. The Cardinals finished the day with three wins and one new school record. Several Cardinals also set facility records in the Vanderbilt Fieldhouse.
"Today was a strong start to our indoor season," said head coach Dale Cowper. "I'm excited about the way we came out and competed. As the season continues I'm confident this group will be able to continue moving our program forward at the ACC and NCAA level."
Emmonnie Henderson got off to a great start with a win in the shot put and finishing second in the weight throw. She also hit facility record marks in both events. She won the shot put with a throw of 16.95m/ 55' 71/2", marking a career best indoor mark. Henderson finished second in the weight throw with a mark of 18.61m /61' 1".
Freshman Alexis Gibbons began her collegiate career with a bang, breaking a seven year old school record in the long jump. Gibbons won the long jump with a personal best and school record mark of 6.26m /20' 61/2". Gibbons broke the previous school record of 6.23m/20'-5 1/4" set by Amaka Omenyinma at the 2009 Big East Indoor Championships. Her mark was also a facility record as well.
Newcomer Jerin Allen also made a big impact in his first appearance as a Cardinal. The junior won the high jump with a mark of 2.17m/ 7' 1 ½".
Overall the Cardinals finished with 21 top five finishes on the day. Louisville will be back in action next weekend at the Hoosier Invite in Bloomington on Dec. 9 before the Holiday break.
